Red Ball

My friend JT told me that a huge red ball would be placed in different part of our city for 7 days.

A red ball? I shook my head. Immediately I thought of a crowd admiring a huge yellow rubber duck a while back. What’s wrong with everyone? It was just a rubber duck or a red ball, can’t you see?

Since there wasn’t much going on around here, I visited the ball on the second day. The ball itself… well… let’s be honest, it was just a red ball. Huge indeed, but other than that, hmm…

However, to my surprise, when you place the red ball in the middle of somewhere, the ball did add something to the total view.

So, I changed my mind (a little bit). Maybe it is okay for us to like the red ball (a little bit).

Time to read about the project, I thought.

On the RedBall project website…

“On the surface, the experience seems to be about the ball itself as an object, but the true power of the project is what it can create for those who experience it.” — Kurt Perschke, the artist.

At some other place (forgot where), I learned that this could be viewed as a performing art. It is how people react to the red ball that is important.

It started making sense to me.

This whole experience taught me to have an open mind. I always thought I did have an open mind, but apparently it could be opened up more. To show my sincere apology to everyone who may be offended by my original attitude toward this project, I offer this idea (FREE)… a giant Rubik’s cube next?

Thanks for visiting my blog.

Peonies and Cee’s Black & White Challenge: Animals

Cee’s Black & White Challenge: Animals

Cee has posted many photos from different gardens in Oregon. Every time I saw those photos, I wish I could visit those gardens too. Then, one day, I thought to myself, “Maybe we have some gardens around here.” To my surprise, we do! 😉

We visited Aspelund Peony Gardens in Kenyon today. When we arrived, a friendly dog greeted us. How did he know that I needed an animal photo for Cee’s Black and White Challenge?

The garden is not big, but it is big enough. It has many flowers in different shapes and colors. And here are some of them…

By the time we left the place, we were content. I miss the dog though… a little bit.

Photos, Thoughts, and Questions

Vatican Museum

Vatican Museums

While we were walking to the Vatican Museum, I saw a groom and bride walking on the other side of street. I remember someone (Amy?) had taken a bride and groom photo in Span. Since this couple looked very nice, I thought to myself “Why not?” I stopped and took time to aim, which was a surprise to me since most of the time I would just raise camera and shoot.

The groom saw me taking a photo. He smiled, pointing me to the bride. The bride smiled. The groom then waved to me. I felt as if they were sharing their joy with me and I was very happy for them.

This is the original photo. At first, I cropped out the extra person on the left and converted it to a black and white photo, which I planned to post. After looking at it for many days, I changed my mind. I liked the original photo better. I think that extra person, actually, helped identifying the place this couple was. In other words, she, somehow, contributed to the story.

What do you think? Would you get rid of that extra person?

San Gimignano

San Gimignano1s

Inside of San Gimignano, Italy’s most picturesque medieval town, there is a dried up well that has many coins and some dollar bills in it. Apparently, people treat it like a make-a-wish well. A couple of young kids tied a magnet to a string and retrieved many coins and even a $5 bill from the well. They were very happy. Bystanders smiled. Cute and smart kids. But is it a right thing to do (morally)? Whose money was it? I had no idea.

Duomo

Did you notice the big TV screen on the left?

I saw a cute kid with his mother in front of Duomo. Should I focus on the boy or the birds? I wasn’t sure which would make a better photo, but decided birds.

Final Question: Sharpness

Some of you probably remember that there was a period of time I suffered with grainy photos. I am happy to say that nowadays I pay more attention to my ISO setting and haven’t seen any grainy photo for a while (Thank you for all the helps I had received!) I remember someone (maybe more than one person) said that he always zoomed in 100% to check photo noises. My question is: do we do the same to check sharpness?

I am thinking… it may depend on the pixel count (trying to use my brain here.) Is there any suggested rule out there?

Thanks for visiting my blog.

Cee’s Black & White Challenge: Take a New Photo

Cee’s Black & White Challenge: Take a New Photo

Cee asks us to take a new photo. Since my husband was out golfing yesterday, I decided to take a walk in downtown and see what I could find. The first thing grabbed my attention was how St. John Church was reflected in the Damon parking ramp’s window.

Lucky me… a school band was performing.

There were two groups of students. While one group was performing, the other group sat and watched. Apparently waiting for your turn was not as fun as performing.

_HHC1265bws

Of course, there were audiences. I didn’t know how this little boy would notice me. There were at least 12 people standing between us – we were on the opposite side of the road, and there was only a small opening for me to take the photo.

After taking a dozen of photos, I decided to move on. And I saw this lady. I asked her if I could take a photo of her and she said yes. It was a great way to end my walk.

Street Photographing while in Italy

We just got back from a 2 week trip in Italy, and had a great time. There are so many things that I would like to share with you, but I need time to digest first. 😉 So, I thought I would share 3 street photos with you in this post.

Traveling with a tour group made it hard to take street photos. I had to pay attention to where my group was. Not to mention that some streets are not easy to walk on – with steps everywhere, so I had to watch the roads, too. Also, when you travel with a group, it is difficult to look and shoot any street photo you want (my excuse). Still, I managed to take some.

Interestingly, in this trip, I came to a realization (didn’t know how I did it) that street photographing is not just catching a specific moment of someone’s (a stranger) life, but it is catching a moment of someone’s life that I feel connected to. Not sure if this makes sense to you; anyway, I do see myself change in a small way.

The first photo was taking at St. Peter’s Square. I watched this woman eating her ice cream like a little kid would do. Suddenly, one person in our group called out to our tour director, who was 10 feet away. Hearing the noise, this woman took her eyes away from the ice cream for a second or two. When she found out what was going on, she laughed and then continued enjoying her ice cream as if we were not there.

The next photo was taking at a pizza place. The old man was sitting downstairs at the bar area by himself. Upstairs was full of people eating pizzas. When we walked by this old man, he didn’t try to make any eye contact with us, didn’t say hi. He seemed smiling and I wondered what piece of memory he was thinking of at that time.

The third photo was taking at the restaurant where we had our farewell dinner. Again, the woman was alone. Her mind was in a faraway place. I took this photo 4 or 5 feet away from her and I don’t think she’d noticed. (Don’t you like how she positioned her hands?)

The first photo was taken by D750; the next two iPhone.

I’ve visited many amazing churches, many beautiful places in this trip. I don’t know how long I would remember them, but these three faces will definitely stay with me for a long while.

Alone

(I am taking a 2 weeks break starting tomorrow. Hope you all have a wonderful 2 weeks.)

I used to hate eating alone in a restaurant. Sometime I would skip a meal to avoid the situation. I didn’t even like to have a cup of coffee in the coffee shop by myself. It was the feeling of not knowing what to do (other than eating, drinking), where to look that bothered me. I’d pretended to read a book, write a letter… Still, I was so discomfort that I couldn’t taste the food.

One day I decided to make a change. I forced myself to go to a restaurant by myself. I kept doing it until I was no longer worry about eating alone.

I still won’t go out of my way to eat alone in restaurants, but when I do, I feel quite all right now… I begin enjoying watching people.

Once in a while, I find the good old uneasy me in other people’s eyes. I feel sorry for the person, but at the same time, I can’t help but feeling joyful… of reconnecting to a good old friend.

Gender Question

This is the last day of my Five Photos, Five Stories Challenge. You can find the challenge rules from my first day’s post Here.

Again, I would like to thank Cosme from bCL Photography for inviting me to participate this challenge, and thank everyone for reading my stories. I am having a lot of fun as you can see. (I am also running out good stories 😉

I would like to invite Suyash Chopra to participate this challenge. Suyash is one of those wise and kind guys I met in this community. I have always learned something every time I visited his blog. I am sure you’ll like his blog as much as I do.

Street Photograph of two boys (watercolor filter)

Street Photograph of two boys (watercolor filter)

A nine year old boy has a fever, so his mother takes him to see a Dr. The receptionist gives them a form to fill out. An opportunity to educate, the mother thinks. She patiently explains to her son why it is necessary to fill out a form. The boy plays with his toy soldiers on the floor; he isn’t listening.

“Name – you write your name here. What’s your name?”

The boy doesn’t answer. She says his name loudly enough for him to hear while writing it down on the paper.

She continues. “Address – do you know our address?”

He doesn’t respond. She says their address and writes it down on the paper.

“Age – You are 9 year old, so you write 9 here. Okay?”

The boy gets up from the floor, plunks himself into the chair next to his mother, still doesn’t make a sound.

“Next… Sex…”

Suddenly she feels a tug at her sleeve. She turns around, her head bumping into her son’s head.

“MOM–” he says and quickly stops himself. He glances around the room. When people stop watching, in an audible voice, he whispers into his mother’s ear, “I haven’t had it yet!”

Potty Training

This is the 4th day of my Five Photos, Five Stories Challenge. You can find the challenge rules from my first day’s post Here.

I would like to invite Lori at Let There be Peace to join the Five Photos, Five Stories Challenge. If we can have one wish comes true, one wish only, I am sure many of us would choose “peace on earth”. Lori’s blog name grabbed me the second I visited her blog. I like her sense of humor (read her about page ;-). I think you’ll like it, too.

A girl (Photocopy filter)

A girl (Photocopy filter)

About the photo… I just started playing with filters in Photoshop lately and as you can see, I am having a lot of fun. Photocopy filter is used for this picture.

Now, the story…

Potty training our kids is one thing that we, parents, would never forget. During that critical time, we educate them, encourage them, support them, and, sometime, even bribe them. We are their cheerleaders around the clock. “Yeah, you did it!”, “Good girl (boy)!”, “You are the smartest!”… We say these phrases over and over to them. They’re the right words to say at that particular moment, we have no doubt.

One day inside of a crowded lady’s room, I heard the sound of clapping hands, followed by a loud, clear, cheerful little girl’s voice. “Yeah, Mom, you did it! Good mom!”
