Dec. 31, 2014 was a sad day for Rochester. Our beautiful downtown B&N bookstore was closed; the new property owner didn’t want to renew their contract. It’s many local people’s favorite place. Even the characters in my YA novel, Jin-Ling’s Two Left Feet, loved hanging out here.
I wish we could, somehow, keep the store there. All we have left is our memories and photos.

Thanks, Cee. Whenever we felt like to get out of the house and didn’t know where to go, we would go there. Whenever we have guests, we would take our guests there first. We do have another B&N at the mall, but this one was very special for us. Oh well… Helen

O how sad…Its really sad when something like a book store meets this fate…and that too such a store close to your heart…seeing the pictures itself, i can imagine why it was such a favorite one of yours..

WalMart mentality. Squeeze out the smaller vendors/retailers. Sad, indeed.

A premier steakhouse and Rochester icon, Michael’s Restaurant, is closed too. They said the restaurant will come back. They said it’s good for the city. I hope so. Helen

Helen–your B&N was beautiful! I feel your pain. Ours is right up the street from my house and that is my lunchtime getaway, my weekend getaway…I would miss it, too. So very sorry…

It was a theater many years ago, and the bookstore kept a lot of original look. I am hoping the new business will do the same. Helen

I hate to see book stores closing. It is happening way too often. The large B&N downtown Fort Worth closed last year…it truly makes me sad.
I have never seen a B&N as beautiful as yours! I too would love spending hours in such a building!

Toronto has recently had a similar issue with a 114 year old landmark building downtown. There has been a huge outcry because it was demolished on the weekend while certain groups were trying to get it designated as a protected historical building.
Unfortunately Toronto isn’t known for being ‘forward thinking’ 😦 It’s all about the money.

What a cool looking place ~ nothing quite like a local bookstore to feel at home… Beautiful shots Helen, and a bit strange to see a mass market bookseller leaving such a prime location.

I think the owner has some kind of plan with the space. I don’t know about others. Whoever opens a store there will have a hard time to sell me anything 😉
