Cee’s Odd Ball Photo Challenge: Week 28

Cee’s Odd Ball Photo Challenge: Week 28

Since year 2009, Rochester is home to several 4 1/2 ‘ tall goose statues, all uniquely designed and decorated by local artists. I have to admit that I wasn’t too thrilled when I saw them the first time, but I like them now. Time, apparently, can do more than healing. Anyway, here is one…

Cee’s Fun Foto Challenge: Contrasting Colors

Interestingly, in Otto’s workshop, lesson 2 – color, we did have an assignment on contrasting colors, which I forgot to mention. This is one of the photos I’ve submitted.

Finding My Photographic Voice – Part 2

This is second post of my thoughts, comments, what I have learned… etc. from Otto’s (In Flow) e-workshop, Finding Your Photographic Voice. Before I start, I would like to ask you a favor. It took me seemingly forever to encourage my husband to start his blog and he finally did. So far, he only posted one photo. If you have time, would you please visit Wei Chen Photo? A little encouragement is good for everyone. Thanks.

How I feel, so far…

Every week, I am anxious to receive a new lesson and find out what our assignments are. After reading the assignments, I admit, the first thought coming to my mind is: “What am I going to do?” Three or four hours later, usually, I start having some ideas and start shooting. Some of my original ideas aren’t good enough. Then I come up with different ideas. In general, as soon as I pass the initial panicking moment, I enjoy it a lot! 😉

I often have to read the lesson twice or three times to get it (don’t ask me why). Even after reading it several times, sometime, I’m still not sure. So sometime I submit a photo, not because it is a good photo, but because I have question about the photo. The purpose of taking this workshop is not trying to impress my instructor, but trying to learn.

My Experience for Lesson 2 (second part 😉

One assignment is to photograph bold color and the other is delicate color. Suddenly it seems to me that, 99.9% of my photos are between bold and delicate. Am I right? I don’t really know. All I know is that I searched around my house, and visited our downtown for any bold color, and I didn’t find it. I guess Midwesterners are not bold color people. For example, the following photo… it is in between, right?

My Experience for Lesson 3

Lesson 3 is playing with shutter speed, depth of field, and gradient. I have used SS mode, Aperture mode less than 10 times before and always wanted to experience more like taking photos with every speed… etc., but I never did it (being lazy). I appreciate this lesson, because it motivated (pushed?) me to do the right thing.

One surprise I got is this following photo, which was shot at 1/500. It is very different from what I saw with my eyes. We can easily be fooled, I learned.

Questions

Every PC monitor is different. A photo looks great on my PC, may look too dark, or too bright on yours. Isn’t that true? If so, there is nothing we can do, right?

Following that line, is there any way I know how my picture will look like in printing? You have to adjust your photo for the specific printer, right?

THANK YOU!!! And have a great day!

When Dave demanded burning everything I had shared with Andy, I was upset. What is he thinking? Doesn’t he know it costs money to replace sofa, bed…?

I watched pieces of my past turning into ashes. My anger toward Dave, somehow, gradually disappeared. My marriage to Andy was a nightmare. Now, I felt free. I turned to Dave, wanting to hug and thank him.

“Now, we have to deal with things stored in your heart,” he said.

In the dark, his voice was cold and controlling, his eyes piercing.

I shivered. It all seemed too familiar.

Street Photographing – Aug, 2014

I begin to realize that if two people walking on the same street taking street photos, they may end up with two totally different set of photos. For me, people’s feelings, emotions and their stories attract me the most.

I saw a big man and his little dog at the new outlet mall. What a cute pair, I thought to myself. I asked the guy if I could take a picture of them, He nodded sheepishly.

As soon as I walked into the Caribou Coffee shop, I noticed these two girls. They focused on each other only. I watched them for a while. Clearly, they were in their own world. It’s nice to have a good friend to talk to, I thought.

At Mall of America, I spotted a family sitting together, eating ice cream. There was no interaction among them, but I sensed a strong bond. I don’t need ice cream; I just want to have my parents and my sister Karin back.

Oh, No, Am I Left-to-Right Now?

I forgot who introduced me the idea of flipping a photo to make it look right… our eyes usually go from left to right because we read from left to right. I remember, in my mind, flipping his image back to original, and didn’t think it had made any difference. Later, Cee did the same thing in her post, Photo Edit Walkthrough. Cee posted both before and after photo. Still, I didn’t know what the big deal was.

I had a discussion about this with Cee. We came to a conclusion that since I read Chinese from right to left (up down, then right to left), and read English from left to right, I must not be sensitive about this issue.

Several days ago, after submitting photos for my lesson-2 assignment, for some reason, I wasn’t happy, but had no idea why. Did it have anything to do with this right-to-left, left-to-right thing? Sure enough, after I flipped the photo, I felt better.

Friday Writing Essential says…
Here we have a photo I took three summers ago. I would like you to write a story about it…

A maple tree

A maple tree

I had never seen a red maple leaf before I came to U.S. The moment I saw one, I fell in love with all of them. Still, Connecticut’s maple trees are the most unforgettable ones for me.

We flew to Connecticut to attend our first Parents’ Weekend at Yale. When the plane started descending, looking out the window, I saw endless of red and yellow leaves shining under the blue sky. As a mother who hadn’t seen her daughter for a couple of months and was going to see her soon, I couldn’t take my eyes away from the beautiful color, thinking how well this scenery had described a mother’s love.

My daughter was excited seeing us. After dinner, she told us Yale’s senior students’ a cappella was very good, and asked us to meet her later to attend the concert.

It took us a while to find a parking spot. We were late.

“It’s almost time for the concert to start. I don’t think we can make it,” my daughter said.

She thought for a while. “Maybe we can, if we walk fast.”

She held my hand, started walking briskly. Her father followed right behind us.

I couldn’t tell which way we were going. In the dark, I let her lead me, felt the warmth of her hand, thinking I was the luckiest person in the whole world.
