Spring is here!

Spring is here, now I am certain.

Yesterday when my husband came home, he said to me, “Aren’t you looking for flowers for Lois? Our neighbor’s tulips are blooming.”

And I thought he never paid any attention to what I said.

Apparently there is this miserable cold going around here… several people got sick in my neighborhood. I don’t know how it works for others… I knew I recovered when I started thinking of food. (Amy, look what I made 😉

This was the first time I baked this kind of buns (包子) instead of steaming them. My neighbor cleaned our gutters the other day and he likes Chinese hamburgers, but his wife wasn’t so sure about the look of those steamed buns. 😉 Now these buns have the “American” look, but they are a little drier.

7-day nature photography challenge: day 7

My blogging friend Lois at On Pets and Prisoners has invited me to participate the 7-Day Nature Photography Challenge. Lois is a wonderful blogger. Please visit her blog and say hi 😉

The mission is to post a nature photograph for 7 days and to nominate a fellow blogger each day. Since many bloggers have done this challenge already, I would like to invite anyone who is interested in this challenge to participate. It is fun!

Last night my husband asked me what we were going to do today. Since this is the last day of this photo challenge, it would be nice to end it with some good pictures of 2 or 3 beautiful Minnesota state parks.

“If we drive along the Mississippi river, we will hit at least 3 state parks,” I said.

He didn’t agree. “More naked trees?” he asked.

This morning I woke up with a cold. Lacking energy, I thought maybe I had no choice but posting some old photos. But it is such a beautiful day; I don’t want to stay home! We pumped our bike tires. Five minutes later, we were on the Douglas State Trail.

The Douglas State Trail is a paved 12.5 mile, multiple use trail developed on an abandoned railroad grade. This trail crosses outstanding rural scenery, traversing some of the richest agricultural land in Minnesota.

The trail begins in northwestern Rochester, travels through the small town of Douglas (for which the trail is named) and terminates in Pine Island. It is generally level and wheelchair accessible.

The day before yesterday, I posted a few photos I took at Yehliu Geopark. Yehliu’s rock formations are amazing, but the place grabbed me the most, actually, was Hualien County in eastern Taiwan. I love the mountains, the fresh cool air, and the quietness. Most of all, I like the feeling of embracing by mountains.

Hualien County is situated in eastern Taiwan Island. It faces the Pacific Ocean to the east, Central Mountain Range to the west bordering Taichung City, Nantou County and Kaohsiung City, Yilan County to the north and Taitung County to the south. It stretches around 137.5 km from north to south with its width ranging from 27 to 43 km long from east to west. Its area is about 4,628.57 km2 and occupies one eight of Taiwan total area.

Despite its vast area, only 7% of the county area occupied by people. The remaining area is occupied by rivers (7%) and mountains (87%). Mountains are composed of Central Mountain Range in the west and Haian Range in the east. The main rivers in the county are the Hualian River, Xiuguluan River and their branches. The plains stretch along the valleys between both mountain ranges with a width around 3–6 km. Due to the restriction of its landscape, Hualien people reside mostly on the alluvial fans of the Huatung Valley plains

One thing I had missed a lot, when I came to U.S., was this little heart-shape red seed I used to own. I was happy finding them in one of my trips back to Taiwan. I don’t know the tree name in English though ;-(

We visited Sakatah State Park this afternoon. It was 50+ degrees. 😉

Sakatah Lake State Park is an 842-acre (341 ha) state park of Minnesota, USA, on a natural widening of the Cannon River near the town of Waterville. The Dakota native to the area called it “Sakatah” which means “singing hills”. — Wikipedia

We had some warm days in between the cold days, so I thought trees should start turning a little green now. To our disappointment, this was what we saw.

_HHC8979--s

Looking hard, I did find some new leaves.

_HHC8982--s

Minutes later, we saw a so-so lake. Just as we were ready to quit, we noticed a beautiful island that has many white trees (probably birch tress) and lots of birds. Park ranger told us we can canoe to the island in summer. “If you like to take photos, you will love there,” he said. Then he added, “But I have to tell you that it doesn’t smell good there.”

In the following picture, you will see the island in the middle, but you probably can’t see any bird. Now I have a good reason to buy a new lens.

Today happened to be the control-burn day in this park.

_HHC8974--s

We asked one of those guys what his job is. He said he is a naturalist.
“Close enough,” I said and I took a photo of him.

Cee’s Odd Ball Photo Challenge: 2016 Week 15

Cee’s Odd Ball Challenge is not topic related. It is one of my favorite challenges.

On Nov. 21, 2015, I posted some photos for Odd Ball 2015 Week #46. Now I have two more photos to add to that collection. 😉

I know many of you like to travel. Here are some photos I took at Yehliu Geopark in northern part of Taiwan. I copied the following paragraphs from Yehliu Geopark web site.

The rock landscape of Yehliu Geopark is one of most famous wonders in the world.
Yehliu Geopark can be divided into three areas. The first area contains mushroom rock and ginger rock. You may learn the development process of mushroom rock as well as witness the appearance of ginger rock, cleavage, pothole and melting erosion panel. On top of that, the famous candle shaped rock and the ice cream rock are presented in this area too.

The second area is similar to the first area, where the mushroom rock and the ginger rock are the main focuses, only they are fewer in numbers. You may see the Queen’s Head, Dragon’s Head Rock, and etc. Since the area is near the coast, rocks that develop into four different kinds of formations can be seen in this area: elephant rock, fairy’s shoe, earth rock and peanut rock. The aforementioned are parts of the layers featuring special shapes as a result of being corroded by sea water.

The third area is the wave-cut platform located on the other side of Yehliu. This area is much narrower than the second area; one side of the platform is closely adjacent to steep cliffs while down below the other side is a scene of torrent waves. Several rocks of grotesque shapes and sizes that are incarnated as a result of sea erosion can be seen in this area, including the 24-filial piety hill, pearl rock and Marine Bird Rock. The third area also includes the major ecology reserve of Yehliu Geopark in addition to the said rock landscapes.

7-day nature photography challenge: day 3

My blogging friend Lois at On Pets and Prisoners has invited me to participate in the 7-Day Nature Photography Challenge. Lois is a one of the nicest person I have ever met online. Please stop by Lois’ blog and say hi 😉

The mission is to post a nature photograph for 7 days and to nominate a fellow blogger each day. I would like to invite Yan at From Hiding to Blogging to participate this challenge. I always think Yan has a special photographic voice. A refreshing voice! (Yan, I don’t know if you already did this or not. If not, I hope you will 😉

I don’t know if every state offers the same thing. Minnesota state park has this Passport Club thing. Basically, when you visit a state park, you can ask the park ranger to stamp on this little booklet (your passport), and when you have visited all MN state parks, you will get a reward. The reward is not much; being able to say I have visited all MN state parks is big!

We do have a lot of beautiful parks. Why do you think so many of us are willing to put up with the cold winter to live here?

Last but not least, “Cheers” to Lois. I am seeing a picture of cotton crop in my mind while staring at fluffy clouds in the sky — a good reason to have a drink, I believe.

My blogging friend Lois at On Pets and Prisoners has invited me to participate in the 7-Day Nature Photography Challenge. (Please stop by Lois’ blog and say hi 😉 The mission is to post a nature photograph for 7 days and to nominate a fellow blogger each day.

I would like to invite Suyash Chopra to participate this challenge. Suyash is another photographer that I admire. I know Suyash is quite busy, but I hope he will take time to do this (I can babysit if that helps. 😉

“Let’s go out to shoot some photos,” I said to my husband this morning. He was surprised because I haven’t been willing to go out for a couple of months.
“Where?” he asked.
“Some place has flowers. I need to send flowers to a friend.”
“Mall?”
I rolled my eyes. “No, it’s for nature photography challenge. Do flowers in the flower shop count?”
“You mean outdoor? You must be kidding. Have you seen any flower in our neighborhood?”
“But, if it is time for Cee’s tulips to leave, we must have something, don’t you think?”

My husband didn’t think so, but we drove to Quarry Hill Park anyway. To my surprise, NO flowers, not even a tiny wild one. I guess I had to settle for new leaves.

_HHC8933--s

Then we saw some mandarin ducks. “Maybe you can hang my message on duck’s neck?” I said to my husband. He ignored me. (His fault, Lois.)

_HHC8902--s

On our way home, I saw one house, two blocks away from our house, has some flowers. But I thought I would check my neighbor’s garden first. My neighbor told me their flowers hadn’t come out yet. But he took me to his neighbor’s house, pointing at a bush and said, “This will have beautiful purple flowers soon.”

I took a photo to make him feel good.

_HHC8941--s

I walked (it is a nice day, by the way) back to that house two blocks away, and rang the doorbell. The lady lives there gave me the permission to take a photo of her flower. Yeah. Mission accomplished!

7-day nature photography challenge: day 1

My blogging friend Lois at On Pets and Prisoners has invited me to participate in the 7-Day Nature Photography Challenge. The mission is to post a nature photograph for 7 days and to nominate a fellow blogger each day.

I don’t enter a lot of challenges nowadays, but the timing for this challenge is good. I need a way to get back on the right track of my life. In fact, when Cee encouraged us to nominate ourselves for this challenge, I almost raised my hand. But I wasn’t sure I was ready for it. When I received the invitation from Lois, I was so happy that I knew I was ready.

Lois is a sweet, kind lady, who has a wonderful sense of humor. Everyone loves Lois! Please visit her blog and say hi 😉

I would like to invite Adhika to participate this challenge… because I miss seeing his photos.

_HHC8892--s

I took these photos of my favorite tree yesterday. It was a weird day: It was quite a decent day at first, then we had a blizzard, then the sun came out (a bright blue sky with a few white clouds), and then had another blizzard, then the sun came out again (a bright blue sky with a few white clouds), then had the 3rd blizzard… “A day to stay home and do the laundry,” I said to my husband.

I couldn’t help but thinking of what had happened to me in recent years. First, I was a happy retiree. Then, I lost my dear sister Karin. After a while, I was happy again. Then I lost my brother Shao. When I was almost done grieving (I thought I did), I lost my dear friend Jeanne. Is it possible that Mother Nature was trying to tell me that there is sunshine after darkness, always? I like to think so 😉

I feel better now.

Thanks for visiting my blog.

Share Your World – 2016 Week 14

Cee’s Share Your World – 2016 Week 14

Epiphyllum oxypetalum (曇花)

Epiphyllum oxypetalum (曇花)

If you could hire someone to help you, would it be with cleaning, cooking, or yard work?

I like Cee’s answer “all three”, but I am going to say “cleaning” and “yard work”. I, actually, like cleaning and doing yard work. Cleaning – I need help getting rid of things. For me, every object has its history and memory; every object is precious. You see my problem? ;-( Yardwork – it has become obvious to me that I don’t know how to grow flowers, so I would hire someone to do that.

What makes you laugh the most?

What children said could be very funny. I still remember the time that my 5 year old daughter asked why our house only had a two-car garage. “Where do I park mine when I get a car?” she wanted to know.

What was your favorite food when you were a child?

Hardboiled egg cooked in soy sauce (滷蛋). My dad told me every time my mom severed that dish, I would jump ups and downs, clapping my hands.

List at least five favorite flowers or plants.

Chrysanthemum – I had never thought a lot about this flower before I was in high school. Then one day, one of my high school friends told me I reminded her of chrysanthemum, and suddenly it became my favorite. Funny how we like or dislike things.

Tulip – it’s the first flower I see after winter.

Epiphyllum oxypetalum (曇花) – For me, this is one of the prettiest flowers. It is called “queen of the night” because it blooms at night. I still remember the night my dad told us to stay up because the flower was going to open. I was so tired; the waiting was quite difficult for me. But when I saw the flower, I was glad that I didn’t go to bed early.

Zucchini – The first few times I had planted zucchini, I thought it was a miracle plant because it had yielded so many zucchinis. Later, I did have a couple of years that I didn’t get many, but the first impression stayed.

Chinese Chive (韭菜) – Chinese chive is easy to grow and doesn’t require a lot of works ;-)… good for making dumplings too.

Bonus question: What are you grateful for from last week, and what are you looking forward to in the week coming up?

Jeane2s

Last week was tough. I lost my best friend Jeanne, whom I had grown up with. We did a lot of things together back then. We even took bath together from time to time because we wanted to talk to each other; she was in her bathroom and I in mine; two bathrooms were separated by a thin wooden wall. I am sad, but grateful that I had had her for many years.

This week, I would like to do something in memory of Jeanne. And I have a plan.

Thanks for visiting my blog.
