Is your refrigerator, organized or a mess inside?
It’s in between. I was shock that one day soon after I got married my husband showed me how to line up items in the refrigerator so they would look like soldiers did at the training camp. I politely told him that I would place items in the refrigerator and he could do the line up part. Needless to say, it never happened. But since I’ve tried not to store too many items in the refrigerator, it’s not too messy either.

If you could be famous for one thing, what would it be?
I really don’t want to be famous. I just want to be a contributor to the society, and live a peaceful, happy life.

What one thing have you not done that you really want to do?
Making a documentary film. I have a long way to go…

Where do you eat breakfast?
In the kitchen. We have a L shape table in the kitchen, and that’s where I usually eat my breakfast. I eat lunch in front of my PC though 😉

Bonus question: What are you grateful for from last week, and what are you looking forward to in the week coming up?
At Cee’s last week’s post, Cee’s Tips and Tricks: Photo Edit Walkthrough of HHC Blog’s Photo, she called me a photographer and an artist. I have a big smile on my face ever since I read that line.

Next week, I am hoping I will have a chance interviewing my college classmate’s mother to find out more about her life when she was young. She and my dad grew up in the same province in China.

Things I Treasure

The Woman at the Donut Shop
After Cee edited the photo that I’ve posted a few days ago and I, learning from Cee’s photo, did some more editing on my version of the same photo, I printed out three copies: 2 of them from Cee, and one was mine. I printed mine out because I wanted to compare it to Cee’s, so I could find out what else I had missed. Since I printed three copies out, I thought, I might as well give all of them to that woman.

We drove to Cannon Falls this morning (6/28) to the donut shop. Sure enough, the woman was there sitting by the window. She waved to me as soon as I got out of the car.

While my husband was ordering donuts, I rushed to the woman’s side and showed her the photos. Her face lit up. She stared at those photos and thanked me at least 3 times — I wasn’t sure if she was aware that she’d thanked me three times. She told me her name is Jane, she has two sons and she is going to give each son one of those photos.

Jane was quite excited, I could tell. I wasn’t going to bother her with how Internet worked, but I really wanted to tell her about Cee’s effort. However, I’d noticed that she was reading my lips when we talked. I speak with Chinese accent, I am sure. Would that cause any problem for her to read my lips? And, to be honest, when someone was only a foot away from me, staring at my mouth, I felt a little uneasy. Also, there was a table of 10 people sitting next to us – I could hardly hear what Jane said. At the end, I decided not to bother to tell Jane what we have done with her photo.

At one point, she asked me if she could pay for the printing fee. I told her it wasn’t much. “It’s a gift,” I said.

She beamed her thanks at me.

Seeing her happy made me happy and that was not something I could buy with money.

Karin
Karin, my sister, is seven years older than I am. Seven years shouldn’t create a big gap between us, but for a long time, we seemed living in a different world. When I was in the elementary school, she was a high school girl. When I was in junior high, she was already a college student. And when I finally went to college, she was in the US, attending graduate school. And later she got married and has a couple of kids. She was busy with her life; I with mine.

I don’t remember a lot about Karin before her college years. She attended a University in our hometown so she lived at home; we shared a room. We had several typhoons every year in Taiwan, which, sometimes, resulted one or two hours of electricity outage. Whenever that happened, in the dark, Karin would sing. She had a beautiful voice.

Karin often invited her classmates over, particularly those who came from places far away. Even though my younger sister and I were too young to fit in their group, she never excluded us.

After I graduated from college, I followed Karin’s footsteps attending graduate school at the University of Idaho. By then, Karin had lived in Albany, New York, for a couple of years. I was lonely and scared. On the second day I arrived in the US, I made a collect call to Karin. She was happy to hear my voice. She told me to be strong and said she would see me when school was over. I felt much better after the call.

A year later, I transferred to State University of New York at Albany and stayed at Karin’s house. I started dating… started having some bad days. Whenever I was in a bad mood, no matter how hard I tried to disguise, Karin knew and she would send my cute little niece and nephew to my room to give me hugs. Those were the best medicines.

Later I found a job in Minnesota; Karin moved to Virginia. Karin’s home was still the home I would go to whenever I needed “home”.

Karin and I grew very close.

I wanted to tell you the story about Karin and me; I thought it’s been long enough since her death, but wrong. So, I would stop my story here.

What I’m really trying to say is that I’ve learned to treasure love. Love comes in many different shapes and forms, and I treasure them all. I am blessed with a wonderful family (parents, siblings, husband, daughter, nieces, nephews, grandniece…) and many great friends. Their loves have meant a lot to me. Besides all that, many times, a stranger, like Jane, shows up from nowhere, brightening my day. Could it be that there exists such a special kind of love that we have for each other even before we know each other?

Life is good because we care about each other.

(I want to thank people who work behind Writing 101 workshop. It’s been a wonderful experience. I enjoy every minute of it, even though I had to stay up until 1 am to finish my story a couple of times. THANKS!)

What is your favorite type of dog? (can be anything from a specific breed, a stuffed animal, drawing, cartoon or character in a movie or TV show)

I did a questionnaire one time, trying to find a perfect dog for me. And the conclusion was that the dog didn’t exist. ;-(

Name one thing not many people know about you.

I once helped a guy writing a letter to a girl. He had written several letters to her but didn’t get any response. She did respond to the one I wrote for him 😉 And he did tell her the truth later.

Have you ever gone scuba diving? If you haven’t, would you want to?

No, but almost. When we traveled to Hawaii, my daughter and a friend and I went to scuba diving. I quit as soon as I learned that you have to rent a mouthpiece.

What was the most important event in your life last week? (anything goes it can be a good nights sleep, finished a reading book, winning the lottery, or getting married)

Received wonderful feedback for my photo! I was hesitated to ask. I am so happy I did. And THANKS to all!

Bonus question: What are you grateful for from last week, and what are you looking forward to in the week coming up?

I am grateful for everyone who has commented on my blog.

Next week I am going to several of my college classmates in LA. We haven’t seen/talked to each other for 40 years. It should be fun. I hope 😉

Writing 101, Day Nineteen: Don’t Stop the Rockin’

Writing 101, Day Nineteen: Don’t Stop the Rockin’

On this free writing day, remember the words of author Anne Lamott: “I don’t think you have time to waste not writing because you are afraid you won’t be good at it.”

Golf Course 2

Golf Course 2

It’s free writing day. I am one of those people who like to write in their heads. I can not only write the first draft, but also revise once, twice, or even three times in my head. Maybe it has something to do with how slowly I type. Or it’s simply because I am lazy. Either way, when it’s time to free write, I often pick something in my head and type it out. But today I decide to let my brain go wherever it wants to go.

After going through all the blog posts in my Reader, the first thing I did was to find out our temperature. It was 72 degree Fahrenheit. Living in Minnesota long enough, I learned to take advantage of all good weather days. It’s definitely a day to practice my golf swing.

On my way to the driving range, I thought of my two sisters. Growing up poor apparently had different effect on each of us. Karin loved shopping; she would buy things without thinking. Yvonne would only buy what she liked. And I preferred to find treasure from their throwing-away pile.

I thought about how I would easily become “obsessed” whenever I found something interesting. Quilting, writing, public speaking, golfing, photographing, videotaping – I have sacrificed many sleeping hours to learn them. And I wish I have more time to learn.

I thought about how much I have changed. Ten years ago, I wouldn’t go to driving range by myself – I worried would laugh at my bad shots. But, now I don’t worry much. Now I feel free. Thanks to the aging process, I guess.

Today, I focused on two clubs: 4 Iron (my worst) and 5 Wood. I believe that hard work will pay off sooner or later. (Practicing golf swing can be qualified as a hard work, right?)

After golfing, I, again, played with photos. Several photographers had responded to my “Seeking Feedback” post. I am very grateful. I hope they know that I take every advice seriously and I really want to become a better photographer.

(Maybe I should find myself a mentor… maybe take an individual class… maybe I should be more patient!)

This week we have a festival in town. I find out it is easier to take street photograph when there is an event going on.

Around 3, Wei came home. “We have tee time tomorrow at 9:50,” he said.

“Sure,” I said.

I think I am ready 😉

Writing 101, Day Eighteen: Hone Your Point of View

Writing 101, Day Eighteen: Hone Your Point of View

The neighborhood has seen better days, but Mrs. Pauley has lived there since before anyone can remember. She raised a family of six boys, who’ve all grown up and moved away. Since Mr. Pauley died three months ago, she’d had no income. She’s fallen behind in the rent. The landlord, accompanied by the police, have come to evict Mrs. Pauley from the house she’s lived in for forty years.
Today’s prompt: write this story in first person, told by the twelve-year-old sitting on the stoop across the street.

house in Penghu

house in Penghu

Mr. Mr., want a glass of lemonade? Only $5.

Too expensive? It’s for a good cause. You see… Wait. Why are you stopping at that house across the street? I hope you are not the new renter because the house is not for rent. Not yet!

Mrs. Pauley, the woman who lived in that house for 40 years, had lost her husband recently and couldn’t pay the rent. Yesterday, Mr. Jones, who owns the house, kicked Mrs. Pauley out. He even brought a policeman with him! I am not lying. I saw it! I swear.

Mom said if I could sell 100 glasses of lemonade, $5 each, we can help Mrs. Pauley pay for the rent.

Yes, I like Mrs. Pauley a lot. She used to babysit me when I was little. She played games with me and gave me cookies. I like Mr. Pauley too. He took me to a baseball game one time.

Another glass of lemonade? Boy, you must be thirsty.

Do I know what Alzheimer is? Of course, I do. People who have Alzheimer forget things.

Mrs. Pauley has Alzheimer? Wow.

It’s not safe for Mrs. Pauley to live alone. You mean Mr. Jones didn’t kick her out? Mrs. Pauley was moved to a nursing home. Really?

Who are you? It’s ok if you don’t tell me.

Two glass of lemonade is ten dollars, Mr.

Seeking Feedback (Learning Photographing part 3?)

Woman at donut shop

Woman at donut shop

I took this photo with my iPhone at a donut shop 40 minutes away from my home. It’s my husband’s favorite breakfast place. Whenever we drive to the city, we would stop there for donut and coffee.

I have seen this woman a couple of times at the store, always by herself; always sitting by the window, always looking out. Street Photographing is a little scary for me. But now that I have been inspired (encouraged) by Lynne (sixdegreesphotography) and Linda (rangewriter), without thinking, I grabbed my phone and took this photo.

I have been staring at the photo for 3 days. I like it a lot. I like her face expression; I like how she sits and the way her left hand is placed on her leg. I really can connect to this photo.

My questions are:

(1) The back of her hair is kind of yellow. Should I be concerned about this? (It does bother me a little bit. I tried to change the color with Photoshop Element, but somewhat failed. I can try harder, but how important is it?)

(2) Apparently, there is some kind of distortion, since the line for the wall is not straight. Again, is it important to straighten up the line? It doesn’t bother me at all, but I was told before that I should always straighten the lines.

(3) I have cropped the photo with “unrestricted” size so I could get it the way I wanted. Is that OK?

(4) Finally, what I really like to know is: how can I improve this photo to a “wow” photo? Composition wise, or lighting (not sure you can change lighting when you do street photographing, am I right?)… etc. I appreciate any suggestion/advice/comment you can offer.

THANK YOU!

(I hope the woman doesn’t mind that I post her photo here. I did tell her that I would bring her a copy next time I go there.)

Writing 101, Day Seventeen: Your Personality on the Page

Writing 101, Day Seventeen: Your Personality on the Page

What are you scared of? Address one of your worst fears. If you’re up for a twist, write this post in a style that’s different from your own.

War

I am scared of war even though I have never experienced one.

When I was young, I had this recursive dream that many fighter planes flying right above my head, dropping bombs everywhere. Every time, in the dream, I was running home. I knew running on street was not a good idea, but I just had to go home to make sure my parents were ok.

I had never experienced war; I had not watched any war movie. The only thing I knew about war was what I saw in my dream.

I wonder what had happened in my previous life.
