This is my submission for Brenda’s A Photo Study: Rhythm I.
Rhythm in visual art is probably the most difficult subject to comprehend for me. More and more, I realize that things I can’t see in my head are harder for me to understand. And rhythm is one of them.
After reading Brenda’s post and watching Ted’s video (link on Brenda’s post) a couple of times, I became concerned, because I didn’t fully understand what they said. As usual, I started googling like crazy. Reading several articles later, I still didn’t quite get it. That’s when I decided to go back to the basic: (1) what is rhythm in music (I thought I knew, but maybe I didn’t.) (2) how does one apply rhythm in visual design (not in photography, but in art design).
I am happy to say that I finally did find an article and a video that helped me to grasp the concept.
Article “Rhythm in Art”: “The concept of rhythm in art represents the easy movement of the viewer’s eyes following a regular arrangement or reproduction of elements in the art work.”
Ah-ha, I totally understand “the easy movement of the viewer’s eyes”! 😉
Video: Beat and Rhythm Explained
This simple video helps me to remember what rhythm is.
I feel exhausted, but I am very happy. Can you sense the beat and rhythm in my words? 😉
Thank you for visiting my blog.
Love the staircase. 😃

Almost too much… ha ha. I had lunch with a friend today. I told him about this, and I think he was confused just like I was when I heard it the first time. 😉
Have a great day.

Thank you Sally. I have waited so long… 😉 My dad was concerned if we could find a job when we got out of the school, so practicing any kind of art work was not encouraged. To be fair, I didn’t realize I had such a strong passion in it either 😉
Have a great day.

Beautiful photos, Helen! I struggled to understand the rhythm. Thank you so much for the links, and your photos explain well. I like the last one especially. 🙂

Thanks, Amy. I have given more thoughts on this. I think maybe it is the word choice. I mean the same concept can be explained in different words, which, in my case, maybe easier to understand. Ha.
Have a great day.

I love the first photo. It presents a simple but perfect concept of “rhythm” in art. ^^
rhythm in music also refers to the listener’s feeling and emotion. However, it refers to musicians physical movements in different instruments stronly. Each instrument has a specific rhythmic feeling. Composers needs to understand each one…

These photos are great Helen
I especially like the first one. My eyes bounced (in rhthym) from side to side, top to bottom. It really helped me to understand the topic. Thanks.

Good morning, Kelly. Thanks for your comment. I have a feeling that people who know music probably would get it quicker. I don’t know too much about music. It sure was a struggle for me 😉
Have a great day.

You make me feel like a VERY lazy blogger, Helen, but your photos illustrated rhythm perfectly, so I didn’t need Google. Phew! 🙂 🙂

Are you kidding me, Jo? Every time I read your Monday Walk, I feel like a VERY lazy person. I followed your steps in my mind, hoping I would get rid of a couple of pounds by doing so. 😉
It’s getting warmer now (40+ F). I can’t wait to go to the trail for a quick a walk. Come to think of it, we don’t have so many interesting site for me to explore. Maybe that’s why I am so lazy? Hmm…
Have a wonderful day, Jo.

Thank you, Doda. You are so kind. Rhythm, tempo… they probably make a lot of sense to people who know music well. All I can say is that I have done my best. Ha.
My dad played a Chinese instrument very well. a few years before he passed away, I secretly tried to learn how to play that instrument to surprise him. Well, let’s say… we had a good laugh when I finally played for him . 😉
