Here is my submission for Brenda’s A Photo Study: Shutter Speed.
Brenda explains shutter speed well in her post. I appreciate how she is able to present the subject in such a thorough and yet easy-to-understand way.
After reading Brenda’s post, one thing came to mind was panning. Last time when I was playing with shutter speed, I didn’t have a chance to take a panning photo. So, you can imagine how excited I was when I saw neighbor’s boy was outside riding his bike. 😉
1/30 Sec. (Panning)
After letting me take several photos, he went on jumping on his trampoline. The shutter speed for next two photos is 1/1600 Sec.)

Last, I am amazed at how good iPhone camera is. All I did was pressing the button; I didn’t even try to focus on anything! And I got this photo. (Not a beautiful photo; still, I was surprised at how easy it was to take a photo of a moving subject.)

I love seeing the detail of Western’s facial expressions while riding and jumping…a gift not seen often in life. Panning is great fun…tried this technique with a hawk yesterday. He flew faster than my pan, sigh.

I saved Brenda’s post but never got around to taking any photos! I am so glad that you did, Helen. The panning shot is wonderful–I am going to have to try that.

Thank you, Lois. I enjoy reading Brenda’s study (in fact, all her posts). It’s quite comforting (maybe a little weird word, but that’s how I feel. Hmm… is it because of her virtual voice? 😉 It’s fun to try different things. Since I am lazy in a way, I appreciate any motivation I can get.
You are doing a lot of challenges (and write a lot of comments). I admire you!!! I still couldn’t figure out how you do it. It seems like I can only handle two the most. ;-(

That is such an amazing shot with the panning technique. Wonderfully done, Helen. It looked like Western was having a looks like having a lot of fun playing around and also being a part of your shots 🙂 Kids will be kids and play around. Never tried panning before – it sounds like you need good timing and a moving subject that doesn’t move too fast. Looks like the sun is out and about where you are, Helen. Hope you get more lovely days out with your camera 🙂

Thank you, Mabel. Western is a shy boy. It took a while for him to open up to me; I am glad he did. He is fun. I love playing with kid!
Panning doesn’t limit to slow moving subjects. There are several YouTube videos on this and one guy was panning a moving car. It is best using continuous shooting mode — I am sure you can see why 😉
We had one warm day — only day above 50 F, and now is 29 ;-( I am sure spring is around the corner.

I have so much to learn about photography. Will leave panning for when I am ready, but for now it is interesting to read and know about 🙂 Hopefully the weather does warm up soon for more comfortable shoot conditions 🙂

Thanks, Lady Oscar. It’s 29 degree now ;-( Actually, the day after that warm day, temperature dropped and it hasn’t come back yet. Teach us to be patient, I guess 😉
