Cee’s Which Way Photo Challenge: 2014 #11
I took this photo at Canyonlands National Park. I have a question, particularly for those who use Nikon D7000 camera. It was a bright day. But it turned out that this photo has following properties: F/20, 1/1600 sec, and ISO 3200. What was my camera thinking? Why AUTO-ISO set ISO to 3200? (Recently, I’ve learned to set a maximum ISO value for AUTO-ISO.)
Beautiful which way for this week. Such gorgeous scenery! 🙂

Beautiful location.
At f22, much less light is being let into the lens (very small opening) – as opposed to something like f4 which would allow much more light to enter. I would recommend shooting in manual mode which will allow you full control over your settings – including iso. Regardless, it’s a very nice shot nonetheless!

MIKE, OMG, is it really you? I’ve bookmarked your site! Several photographers have mentioned the importance of engaging our subjects. You showed us how you engaging them. I thought that was great. (It’s easier to learn from examples, I think.)
You are right. Using manual mode will give us the full control. I begin to understand why we should use manual mode and begin feel more comfortable of doing it. But I am still mad at my camera. Even though F22 doesn’t give enough light, it should reduce shutter speed first, shouldn’t it? It could use 1/250 second instead of 1/1200. I was surprised to say the least. Helen

Very pretty, but there’s no way I’d drive or walk down that road.

I didn’t drive or walk down either. Seeing it from a distance is good enough for me too 😉 Helen

Great shot, Helen. I don’t know much about f/ss/iso, ss /1200 and iso 3200 is 😕

Thanks, Amy. ISO is like ASA in the film days. The higher number of ISO create more noise, but it let you take photos in darker place. I liked ASA 100 or 200. ASA 400 is too high for me because I didn’t like the grainy look. Now ISO can go up to 6400. (Not sure this description is 100% correct, but should be close.)
Anyway, I think if the camera is smart enough, if more light is needed, it should increase the shutter speed so more light can come in (since there is a lot of room to increase shutter speed from 1/1600 or 1/1200 per second), instead of increase the ISO number. I was just wondering if I have some setting wrong. Helen
